Fluffy, fragrant Jasmine rice is easier than you think—no fancy appliance required. With just a pot and a few pantry basics, you can have tender, aromatic rice on the table in just 30 minutes. Optional spices in the boiling water add a subtle layer of flavor, while garnishes like fresh cilantro or crispy fried onions offer a simple but delicious finishing touch.

Start by rinsing the rice in cold water to remove excess starch, then lightly sauté it with a little olive oil until fragrant. Turn the heat up to high and add HOT water and the optional spices. As soon as the rice begins to boil in the water, give it a quick stir to unstick any rice that is attached to the bottom of the pot and then cover the pot and reduce the heat to low. Set a timer for exactly 20 minutes. Once the timer goes off remove the pot from the heat and allow the rice to rest undisturbed for 10 minutes to finish steaming. No peeking until after a full 10 minutes! Remove the lid and fluff the rice with a fork, garnish if you like and your tender, fragrant Jasmine rice is ready to serve. It is that easy!

This Perfectly Cooked Stovetop Jasmine Rice is one of the best and fastest way to make perfectly fluffy rice every time. I don’t use a rice cooker even everyone thinks all Indians do. I find that the stovetop method produces a fluffy rice and it is easier to use a pot that is close by rather than going through the abyss of small appliances on the shelfs in my pantry, just to find the rice cooker and then having to take the time to wash it out and finally setting up your rice for cooking. Ugg now that is too much work.

Of course, rice cookers have their place—perfect for limited stovetop space, daily batch cooking, or keeping rice warm at potlucks. I love mine for big gatherings when I want fresh hot rice. But for everyday meals? This stovetop method is my go-to. Try it once, and it just might become yours too.

Note

Water Ratio Tip: Start with 1 cup rice to 1.25 cups hot water. If you prefer slightly softer rice, go up to 1.5 cups.

Sautéing Adds Depth: Lightly toasting the rice in olive oil brings out a nutty aroma and keeps grains from clumping.

Rest Time Matters: Don’t skip the 10-minute rest—it lets the rice steam fully, making it fluffier.

Use a Tight Lid: A snug-fitting lid helps trap steam for even cooking.

Double the Batch: This method scales easily—just keep the same rice-to-water ratio.

Make it Aromatic: Add a bay leaf, cardamom pod, or whole clove to the water for gentle Indian-inspired fragrance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Expand All:

Q: How do I keep it from sticking to the pot?

Use enough oil in the sauté step, don’t lift the lid while steaming, and let it rest before fluffing.

Q: Do I have to rinse the rice?

Yes—unless your rice is enriched, rinsing removes surface starch, which helps the rice cook up fluffy rather than sticky or gummy. If you are using enriched rice do not wash it so the enriched vitamins that were added do not get rinsed off.

Q: Can I use this method for other types of rice?

This is a great method for Jasmine rice.

For Basmati or long-grain white rice, water ratios and timing may vary slightly.

Q: Why sauté the rice first?

It enhances the flavor and helps coat each grain in oil, reducing clumping.
