Fluffy, fragrant Jasmine rice is easier than you think—no fancy appliance required. With just a pot and a few pantry basics, you can have tender, aromatic rice on the table in just 30 minutes. Optional spices in the boiling water add a subtle layer of flavor, while garnishes like fresh cilantro or crispy fried onions offer a simple but delicious finishing touch.
Start by rinsing the rice in cold water to remove excess starch, then lightly sauté it with a little olive oil until fragrant. Turn the heat up to high and add HOT water and the optional spices. As soon as the rice begins to boil in the water, give it a quick stir to unstick any rice that is attached to the bottom of the pot and then cover the pot and reduce the heat to low. Set a timer for exactly 20 minutes. Once the timer goes off remove the pot from the heat and allow the rice to rest undisturbed for 10 minutes to finish steaming. No peeking until after a full 10 minutes! Remove the lid and fluff the rice with a fork, garnish if you like and your tender, fragrant Jasmine rice is ready to serve. It is that easy!
This Perfectly Cooked Stovetop Jasmine Rice is one of the best and fastest way to make perfectly fluffy rice every time. I don’t use a rice cooker even everyone thinks all Indians do. I find that the stovetop method produces a fluffy rice and it is easier to use a pot that is close by rather than going through the abyss of small appliances on the shelfs in my pantry, just to find the rice cooker and then having to take the time to wash it out and finally setting up your rice for cooking. Ugg now that is too much work.
Of course, rice cookers have their place—perfect for limited stovetop space, daily batch cooking, or keeping rice warm at potlucks. I love mine for big gatherings when I want fresh hot rice. But for everyday meals? This stovetop method is my go-to. Try it once, and it just might become yours too.
